2008 Program and Workshop Schedule

The monthly meeting of QUILT offers a range of activities for quilters and quilt lovers. Meetings begin at 7:00 at the Holiday Inn in Springdale, AR unless otherwise announced. Exceptions include the February and May meetings: see Events page for more information.  Generally we schedule the Program first, followed by a short business meeting. We conclude each meeting with members and guests showing quilts at Show And Tell.

Prior to the meetings some people browse the guild library or shop with the local vendor invited to set up that month. Others choose to take advantage of the mini lesson offered at 6:00 before the meeting by a guild member.

You will be inspired by the talented quilt teachers, if you choose to participate in any of the workshops offered by the program presenters.

Biographies of Lecturers

Barbara Hancock
I began quilting 27 years ago when new quilters were taught sampler quilts in 16 inch squares. My first quilt, a king size sampler, was constructed of muslim and two calico prints. It is not my favorite quilt, but it still brings back fond memories of the weeks and weeks it took to construct it and then to hand quilt it.

During the late 80's I taught quilt classes at a local quilt shop, at my church, and to neighbors and friends in my home. During my first two decades as a quilter I made most of my quilts as gifts to family and friend. It really wasn't until I retired from a 43 year career in nursing that I got back to quilting in a serious way. This last year and a half I have concentrated on mostly on making gifts and art quilts and for the first time I entered quilts in our show. Smaller projects seem more a more comfortable fit for me because ther are so many things I want to do. There is just not enough time to do it all if I do bed quilts.

As an Army brat and an Air Force nurse, I have traveled and lived in many countries. That exposure has encouraged me to take advantage of the many ethnic fabrics, especially orientals, that are available to quilters today. Every time I attend a meeting, a workshop, or visit with another quilter I am stimulated to try something new or to improve my skills. I have so much to learn and being in Northwest Arkansas with all the wonderful quilters here is the very best place for me.

Kaye England
Kaye began quilt making and fabric collecting in earnest in the early 1980’s, but was influenced early on by a family of needle workers. She now designs fabrics for Wilmington Prints and heads her own publishing company, Kaye England Publications. Kaye travels the world conducting sell-out lectures and workshops showcasing her wonderful and infectious fabrics, patterns and quilts, as well as her unique and honest outlook on life. Kaye can also be seen on several episodes of HGTV’s Simply Quilts.

Kaye has been described as a colorful individual generating enthusiasm and excitement in her work and having great fun in the process. Despite a hectic teaching schedule, Kaye always finds time to quilt. She has written 13 books and recently produced 3 feature length instructional DVD using her Nifty Notions® “Cut for the Cure™” rulers called More.. Smart Piecing Techniques & Plates-A-Plenty.

Kaye was born and raised on a farm in Glasgow, Kentucky. She now resides in Indianapolis, Indiana. She has two children and six grandchildren

Barbara Booy
I have been quilting for 35 years. When I was a young Mom back in 1973, I sent away for a FREE Quilters Newsletter and when it arrived, I was TOTALLY HOOKED! I did traditional designs for the first 2 quilts and then started designing my own block patterns. I have had several of my patterns printed in different quilting magazines and enjoy seeing what other quilters do with my designs. One of my wall hangings was juried into Paducah, one of my quilts is on the back of a book, and, during a particularly "artsy" period, a few wall hangings hung in art exhibits. One of my quilts will be published in the Jan-Feb 2008 issue of Quiltmaked Magazine. Since I retired and moved to Oklahoma in 2006, I have started sending designs into quilting magazines again and have aspirations to publish a book.

I think my quilts and my style can be described as "contemporary." I hope that you will enjoy seeing them as much as I enjoy sharing them!

Dava Carrell
Dava Carrell, self taught seamstress, discovered her unique sewing abilities in 1962. Sewing for 15 years with out wearing a thimble convinced her that if she took a quilt class, she would at least learn how to use a thimble. It was then, in 1972, that she became intersted in the wonderful world of quilt making .Her entusiasm and accomplishments enabled her to receive the title, Certified Quilting Teacher given by The National Quilting Association (NQA) in 1981. She has maintained her cerificate ever since. Dava's unique gifts has lead her to teach and lecture at many qults shops, quilds, chruch groups, County extentions and colleges.

Her Goal in teaching the fine art of quiltmaking is to instill in her students a deeper appreciation for the art of quilting and a true love for quilt making. The greatest pleasure is the doors she opens for others when they learn to do patchwork and and quilting. She delights in nothing better than to be with people who share the sames quilting interest that she does. Through teaching Dava has truly made a patch work of friends .
